Got Any Kahlua / The Collected Recipes of the Dude by Daniel Zwicke is the most BROMANTIC Cookbook I’ve ever read. This is not your mom’s cookbook, and it certainly isn’t your grandma’s cookbook. You are more likely to find recipes for saucy meats and cocktails than you are to find some fancy chicken cordon bleu because this book is a DUDE’S cookbook. Never in my life has a cookbook made me laugh until I read this one. I can almost see my hick, bro, burly, manly uncle writing this one. It just SMACKS of masculinity and a lack of culinary skills which is impressive. This is a book for those on a budget, for those who aren’t really that picky when it comes to calories and a balanced diet as long as it’s tasty and full of meat or alcohol. I enjoyed it so much that I read it in one quick sitting!

Daniel Zwicke knows his audience … Dudes. Like I said, there are cocktail recipes up the Wazoo, most of them variations on quotes; The Dude’s quotes; favorite varieties of White Russians. I had the opportunity to try these dude-friendly drinks when making them for my fiance’s POKER NIGHT , and let me tell you, they were a smash hit! While this isn’t a traditional recipe book, it’s got a lot of hidden gold in there and it’s spelled out in a way that is easy for guys to understand. There’s no complicated, ten thousand step process for each meal and/or recipe. It’s all, quote ; take a can of X ingredient, add a chopped cup of Y ingredient, and there you go! quote; I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and have saved a copy in my recipes folder in case I need more dude-friendly drinks and meals for my hubster-to-be!

Best Cookbook Ever! Abide in It!

Format: Paperback
Best Cookbook ever you ask? Well, yes, if you’re a fan of the Dude and The Big Lebowski, the greatest cult movie of all-time. The book is quite funny, with quips & quotes of the Dude and all his friends. But it’s not just that. The book is filled with some great recipes that are geared towards being simple and easy to perepare, and are all super tasty, believe me I’ve cooked many of them, and they’re absolutely awesome. I especially love the Dudes Cowboy Chili, Da Fino Meatballs, Walter’s Jewish Penicillin, the In-N-Out Burger, and Bozo’s Manhattan Clam Chowder. The recipes are well written and easy to follow. Oh, and another point, the recipes and food are geared towards the budget minded, and there are great tips on how to save money through cooking. You gotta love it, a cookbook cntered around the Dude, with tasty easy to make dishes that save you money. What’s better than that?

ARMY BASE STEW

Ingredients

for the dashi stock:

  • 6 cups water
  • 1-2 dried shiitake mushrooms
  • 6 dried anchovies, head and innards removed (if you can’t find dried anchovies, substitute 3 tbsp fish sauce)
  • 1 sheet dried kelp (kombu)
  • for sauce:
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp Korean red pepper paste (gochujang)
  • 1-2 tbsp Korean red pepper powder (gochugaru) (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine (optional)
  • generous pinch black pepper (optional)
  • for the stew:
  • 1 cup cabbage, chopped
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped kimchi, well-fermented
  • 2 scallions, chopped, plus more for garnish
  • 2 hot dogs or 2 oz Polish kielbasa, sliced
  • 4 oz Spam (1/3 can, or more if you prefer)
  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup dduk (Korean rice cakes, optional)
  • 4-6 oz tofu, sliced (1/2 package, optional)
  • 1/4 cup baked beans (optional)
  • 1/4 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
  • 1-2 packets ramen
  • slices of white American cheese or mozzarella, for topping

Instructions :

  1. If using duk, place it in a bowl with plenty of cold water and let soak while you prepare everything else.
  2. Prepare the stock. Combine 6 cups water, mushrooms, anchovies, and dried kelp in a large 5-6 quart pot, or a hot pot if you have one. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and let simmer for 5 minutes, then remove kelp. If using anchovies, let simmer for another 5 minutes, then remove anchovies.
  3. Meanwhile, mix together the sauce ingredients (garlic, gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, rice wine, and pepper) in a small bowl.
  4. Place the cabbage, onion, kimchi, scallions, and sliced meat into the simmering broth, then place the ground beef in the center. If using, also add the dduk, sliced tofu, beans, and mushrooms. Pour the sauce over top. Reduce heat to medium and let simmer for 10 minutes, or until ground beef is cooked. Stir the ground beef to break it up into smaller pieces. You can leave the other ingredients in a ring around the beef for presentation, or just mix it all up.
  5. Add the ramen to the center of the broth and cook for 2-3 minutes more, until noodles are soft. Top with American cheese or mozzarella if desired, and enjoy immediately!

My First Lebowskifest

BIG LEBOWSKIFEST  August 16, 2011

Hammerstien Ballroom, August 16, 2011,  Fans of Jeff Bridges and the Greatest Cult Movie of

All-Time, The “BIG LEBOWSKI” were treated to a special treat last night in New York City.

It was the First Ever Cast Reunion of the Major Players of the Coen Brothers Masterpiece.

On hand for a Q&A prior to a World Premier Screening of the Big Lebowski Blueray Special Addition, were none other than the DUDE Himself, “Jeff Bridges,” his sidekick Walter “John Goodman” and New York Actors of the cast; Steve Buscemi (Donny), Julianna Moore (Maud), and

“The Jesus,” John Turturro …. Musical Director, Tbone Burnett was also on hand as he and Jeff Bridges are in Town to promote Jeff Bridges first album to coincide with the Lebowski Blueray release. Some Full-On Promotion. Burnett produced the album.

Well there was a lot of energy in the air, 5,000 Urban Achievers and Amateurs, many dressed as their favorite characters; most of which there were many a “Dude,” a bunch of “Walters,” Maude’s, a few “The Jesus’s,”  I saw one Cowboy Stranger (ala Sam Elliot), no Milionaere Lebowski’s, a few “Donny’s,” No Jackie Treehorn’s, but a Few Nylist’s, and no Bunny Lebowski’s.

Anyway, the costumes were all great, but most of all was the energy and Good-Time-Dude-Mood filled the Air. It was electrifying.

As for the festivities. The Q&A was a bit of a Let-Down, I’m very sorry to say, Being such a Biog Lebowski Fan, Lover of the movie and such wonderful actors as Jeff Bridges and John Goodman. The Q&A didn’t hit it on the mark, and was not as great as I thought it would be. It was a bit Flat, but I enjoyed it never-the-less, just to be able to see Jeff Bridges, Julianna, John Goodman, Buscemi, Tbone, and John Turturro Live and on stage together was enough for me and any True Fan of the Dude, despite its shortcomings, “We All Loved It.”

At first, I was thinking about leaving after the Live stuff and not watching the Screening of the Movie. I’ve seen it 30 times. But  I stepped back and though, hey you don’t do this every day. Here i am with thousands of other like-minded fellow “Achievers.” I can’t let this moment pass me by. I just gotta watch the Big Lebowski with 5,000 Fellow Lebowski-Heads. So I stayed. And glad i did. It was a blast, and all Rocky Horror Picture Show, thousands screamed out all the famous lines; “Shut the Fuck Up Donny,” Got Any Kahlua?, “What About the Fuckin Toe?,” “He Fixes the Cable?,” What Coitus?, You brought a Pomeranian Bowling?, “It Really Tied the Room Together,” “He Peed on Your Fuckin Rug,” “Obbiously You’re Not a Golfer, and on and on. It was hilarious, a Great Time, and a way for 5,000 Dude Lovers to forget about the Stock Market, The Shitty Economy, and any other of their troubles. “The Dude Would.”
